They are a San Francisco-based metal band formed in 1981 by James Hetfield (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums). After several bassist and lead guitarist changes (including Dave Mustaine), the band settled on Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett, respectively.

Metallica (also known as The Black Album) is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica and was released on August 12, 1991 through Elektra Records to critical acclaim. Metallica produced five hit singles that are considered today among the band's best-known songs: "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters", "Wherever I May Roam", and "Sad But True", also Don't Tread on Me was released as a promo single. The band promoted the album with a series of tours.

They're the studio album's poor relation; uninspiring space fillers. That is, until you stumble across S&M. An abbreviation of 'symphony and Metallica', by any measure, S&M is a huge triumph. It's also a great album to prove the point that anyone who claims that Metallica have nothing worth listening to post-'Black' album is a fucking idiot. In fact, the band’s fearless risk-taking and sense of adventure post-1991 arguably makes their ‘second act’ all the more more interesting – albeit their quality control nose-dived significantly.

The album also marked the first time that Metallica had ever recorded their basic tracks live together in the studio. We wanted a live feel, James Hetfield told Guitar World in 1991. This time I wanted to try playing as a band unit in the studio. It lightens things up and you get more of a vibe. Everyone was in the same room and we were able to watch each other. That helped a lot, especially with some of the bass and lead stuff.

Metallica are back in the studio recording their ninth (original) studio album. Here’s what it says at Metallica. com, for those of you too lazy to check it out: Metallica left the comfort of HQ this week to descend upon the greater Los Angeles area to begin recording their 9th original album. They’ve started recording now, will take a break for the Sick of the Studio 07 tour and return to recording in August. Lars was hoping that they could get the album out by the end of 2007, or January 2008 at the latest.
