Shock City Maverick is a 2004 studio album by American rapper Beans, released on Warp.
Shock City Maverick, his third and best solo project, finally-and so at the icy techno state his previous projects struggled to reach. So thoroughly electric and synthetic are the tracks that when you hear the droning cello on the instrumental "A Force on Edge," it seems to be a 1000-year-old relic recovered by a team of urban archaeologists. There are no trees in Beans's future city, and the sky is the colour of a television tuned to a dead channel. The high points of Beans career, in terms of records, happened on Anti Pop Consortium's first album "Tragic Epilogue" and here on his second full length solo effort "Shock City Maverick. Although my greatest rapper list is comprised of freaks and wierdos, this album alone has ushered this man right to the top.

Riding another set of his own crisp, gleaming, jagged-edged productions, Beans follows his LP and EP releases from 2003 with Shock City Maverick. Nothing scrambles the brain like Tomorrow Right Now's "Hot Venom," and no track has lyrics that hit as hard as Now, Soon, Someday's "Win or Lose You Lose," but the album maintains a consistency that neither of those releases can claim. His flow remains unique, and he has the odd contradictions to match.

Where the smart rap of Antipop Consortium came off as quick and cutting, Maverick just seems remote.
Beans ‘Shock City Maverick’ UK Tour dates 17th November - Komedia - Brighton 18th November - Scala - London 19th November - Sub-Club - Glasgow 21st November - Crawdaddy - Dublin 23rd November - Thekla - Bristol. Beans’ intense live performance see him accompanied only by a mic and, for most of the show, a backing track. The minimal set-up emphasises Beans’ stunning vocal talents and ability to ride a rhythm either over a beat or totally a cappella. 0/. Most popular news.
