The Arpeggione (also known as the "Guitarre d'amour") was a bowed instrument with six strings somewhat between a guitar and a cello invented by the Viennese guitar-maker Johann Georg Stauffer (1778-1853) in either 1821 or 1823. It became obsolete after about 10 years, long before Schubert's sonata was even published. php?title Arpeggione Sonata, D. 821 (Schubert, Franz)&oldid 2809467.

So, here is the young Lynn Harrell and an equally youthful James Levine on the podium with the London Symphony Orchestra offering us this great concerto AND the interesting Schubert sonata for cello and piano, the "Arpeggione" Sonata, as a "filler. If I had to say which emotion Harrell uses most here is would probably be an heroic point of view, with this masterpiee portrayed as a bold, swaggering and confident forwrd propulsive work. To be sure, there are plenty of pretty and delicate passages interwoven into this score, but the gist of the message is an adventurous one,.

The Sonata in A minor for Arpeggione and Piano, D. 821, was written by Franz Schubert in Vienna in November 1824. The sonata is the only substantial composition for the arpeggione (which was essentially a bowed guitar) which remains extant today. The sonata was composed in November 1824, about a month after he had returned to Vienna from his second stay in Zseliz.

Arpeggione Sonata, D. 821. Franz Schubert. Solo Instrument and Piano. Arpeggione Sonata, D. Franz Schubert wrote his Sonata in A minor for Arpeggione and Piano, commonly known as the Arpeggione Sonata, in 1824. It is a work in three movements, and it represents the only notable composition for arpeggione which remains extant. The work itself was published posthumously, and by that the arpegionne was not only no longer a novelty, but it had almost dissapeared as an instrument. Nowadays the piece is usually played by a cello-piano duet.
