The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics come from the Defence of Fort M'Henry, a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the then 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Much preferring The Star-Spangled Banner, however, Sousa purposefully had his band play it at almost all of his concerts- sometimes just the melody, other times it would be sung-until people grew familiar with it, grew to love it, Hildebrand says. Sousa’s cause was taken up by a small group of Maryland women, the Daughters of 1812, who lobbied their congressmen to submit a bill to have The Star-Spangled Banner recognized as the national anthem. But their momentum was checked by the passage of the Volstead Act in 1919. In early March, just after opting out of his 49ers contract to become a free agent, Kaepernick put the word out that he will no longer kneel during the national anthem. Ranging an octave and a half, The Star-Spangled Banner is among the more challenging songs in Vincent’s-or anyone’s-repertoire. God Save the Queen, for instance, covers less than an octave.
