IUPAC definition of 'plastic': Generic term used in the case of polymeric material that may contain other substances to improve performance or reduce costs. Note 1: The use of this term instead of polymer is a source of confusion and thus is not recommended. Note 2: This term is used in polymer engineering for materials often compounded that can be processed by flow.

Visiting a Plastic Paradise. I’m here in Waikiki with my family. The purpose of the trip: helping my parents. I remember seeing the plastic tides on the beaches in Hong Kong, back in the early 1980s when I lived there. Seeing your photos brought it all back to me. Is this going to be humanity's legacy to the earth – billions of tiny pieces of plastic, in circulation for ever?

Plastics are a relatively new invention. The first man-made plastic, called Parkesine after its inventor Alexander Parkes, is revealed at the Great International Exhibition in London. Created from part of the cell wall of plants (cellulose), Parkesine was transparent, moldable and retained its shape when cooled. The material was touted as able to do anything that natural rubber could-but less expensively.
