Orville Peck’s first album, Pony, is out via Sub Pop on March 22, and it’s premiering in full below. It’s a country record, built out of broken-glass heartbreak, tearful melodies, and sweeping, deserted drama, wandering from one blackened torch song to the next. Here, Peck sings about longing, meanness, and impossible loneliness in a harrowing baritone. He reaches back into the canon - towards Roy Orbison’s solitude and Johnny Cash’s outlaw fiction and Merle Haggard’s confessional verse - earnestly and in good faith
Orville’s debut album, Pony, delivers a diverse collection of stories that sing of heartbreak, revenge and the unrelenting tug of the cowboy ethos. Warm lap steel guitars and echoing drums move through dreamy ballads and sometimes near frantic buzzsaw tunes - all the while paying homage to his country music roots. Pony was produced by Orville Peck, recorded and mixed by Jordan Koop at The Noise Floor on Gabriola Island, British Columbia and mastered by Harris Newman at Grey Market Mastering in Montreal, Quebec. released March 22, 2019.
ORVILLE PECK: I’m Orville Peck and I’m a country star. My middle initial is J, but nobody ever told me what it stood for, so I change it up from time to time: Orville James Peck, Orville John Peck, Orville Joaquin Pec. t makes going to the DMV interesting. AC: Let’s talk about your penchant for always wearing a mask. AC: Let’s talk about your debut album. Why did you call it Pony? OP: I named it Pony because it has so many connotations to me: the obvious cowboy aspect, the kind of gay slangy aspect, the showy aspect, the lonely aspect. The pony feels like a sad figure to me. Not quite a horse, not quite a donkey―just a sweet, sad little guy. I feel that.

Album · 2019 · 12 Songs. But Peck’s flamboyant update of the archetypal outlaw look is the perfect advertisement for a debut album that puts its own subversive spin on old-school country and early rock ’n’ roll. Peck has clearly spent many a late, lonesome night studying the classics, an education that’s blessed him with a rich, sonorous voice that can slide effortlessly between a sweet ’n’ low Elvis-like quaver and angelic Roy Orbison-esque ascensions. But a closer listen reveals the scuffs on Pony’s pristine retro facade- Kansas (Remembers Me Now) may sashay in like the sort of prom night slow-dance serenade you’d.
