The Beat of the Brass is the tenth album release by the popular 1960s instrumental group Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. It was the last album by the Tijuana Brass to be released in both mono (LP 146) and stereo (SP 4146) versions; all albums afterward would be released in stereo only. The album was released on the heels of a television special by the same title (telecast April 22, 1968 over CBS).
The Brass had been on a roll for a few years and Alpert's trumpet tone is noticeably a bit weaker, but the music was still grooving. Opening up with a driving version of "Monday, Monday", complete with a bit of a Dixieland feel in the middle, is a perfect opener. Longtime TJB contributor Sol Lake penned two beautiful songs - "A Beautiful Friend" and "She Touched Me" - both with carry the classic TJB sound . This series of official re-releases of the Tijuana Brass are a real treat. The remastering creates a crisp, full sound at any volume. The cases are cardboard, which I've come to prefer over jewel cases because the hard plastic cases break so easily. The original album art front and back takes me back in time.
