The Newport Jazz Festival is a music festival held every summer in Newport, Rhode Island. Elaine Lorillard established the festival in 1954, and she and husband Louis Lorillard financed it for many years. They hired George Wein to organize the first festival and bring jazz to Rhode Island. Most of the early festivals were broadcast on Voice of America radio, and many performances were recorded and released as albums. In 1972, the Newport Jazz Festival was moved to New York City

Their personnel included saxophonist Scott Hamilton, cornetist Warren Vache, and, on one date, special guest saxophonist Al Cohn. The Newport Jazz Festival has represented the best in jazz since its birth in 1954

Ricky Ford, Scott Hamilton, Oliver Jackson, Eddie Jones, Gray Sargent, Norris Turney, Warren Vache, and George Wein himself are on board. Mack David, Duke Ellington. 4. Johnny Come Lately. 5. Blue and Sentimental. Count Basie, Mack David, Jerry Livingston. 6. Jumpin' at the Woodside. Count Basie, Jon Hendricks. 8. In a Sentimental Mood. Duke Ellington, Manny Kurtz, Irving Mills.

Midnight Concert in Paris. Jazz impresario George Wein is obviously more widely known for founding the Newport Jazz Festival and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (among others) than as a musician, but he always gives it his all when he gets around to recording. Although he's hardly an innovator or an important pianist, he always surrounds himself with top-notch musicians, and this 1961 concert at the Olympia Theater in Paris is no exception. His group includes Pee Wee Russell, Ruby Braff, Vic Dickenson, Jimmy Woode, and Buzzy Drootin, all of whom are in fine form.
