Romeo and Juliet and the Symphony are modal in character and beautiful pieces to listen to. They are deeply felt and yet assessible to anyone. Kaddish is more representative of later Diamond works, twelve note without being twelve tone.

Whether it's appropriate or not, the Symphony No. 3 of David Diamond is modal, tonal, chromatic, lyric, graceful, charming, deeply expressive, brilliantly scored, and even profoundly moving. And whether it's appropriate or not, listeners can only be grateful for its existence, just as they can only be grateful for this 1991 recording by Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony. Clearly, Schwarz and the Seattle love Diamond's music and they perform it with dedication, enthusiasm, and conviction, as well as power, precision, and no small degree of persuasion. The rest of the works. Cellist Janos Starker sings the solos in Kaddish like a cantor and throughout, Delos' digital sound is as good as all but the best stereo sound.
