Every album that Beck releases has something new to offer. Coming on to the music scene in 1994 Beck has only been around for 11 years yet he has done so much for music. Recognized for his singles Loser and Where It's At Beck has made a name for himself. techno" On Guero Beck takes everything he has done and combines it all onto one album. This is a good idea but there are a few problems.

Not his best...Not his worst...Pretty good. It's more of a light listen, casual and fun. Definitely feels like the dessert to Odelay's dinner. Nice pressing, always love me some 45 RPM.

Haven't heard this particular Beck album before, but "E-Pro" was playing at a restaurant recently - I Shazamed it, realized who it was by and got so hooked that there was no way I could pass up a copy of this album when I saw it at the new arrivals section of FeeLit (ultra-hip record store in San Diego - thanks guys for the good vibes!). The whole album turned out to be a great expansion upon the DIY vibes of the classic Odelay - track after track of ultra-catchy hip-hop-slide-guitarish-alt-rock grit laced with the occasional Latin influence and a nice nod to Antonio Carlos Jobim. It's a definite keeper. This is also a really, really good reissue. Sonically, it hits absolutely all the right buttons - even though it may not be the most dynamic album in the world, the mastering has excellent clarity and warmth with a sizeable soundstage, wonderful immediacy, great top end extension, HUUUGE punch factor, and not to mention strong, clear, precise and weighty bass. It's a perfect match for the lo-fi feel of the album.Shockingly, even side 2 sounds excellent at its excessive borderline 28-minute duration... ESPECIALLY for a regular non-DMM record. Vinyl mastering is a fine art, and Golden's engineers went above and beyond the authority of the garden-variety lacquer cutter to carefully cram a great deal of bass and depth into those tight grooves - the only sacrifice at all being a reduced decibel level... which, by my standards, is perfectly fine when the vinyl is fairly quiet! It's absolutely astonishing that there is utterly zero muddiness or congestion to be heard here.It trumps the Baby Driver soundtrack with similarly long sides by a HUGE margin... why that one couldn't sound as good as it ought to be is beyond me. Heck, I'd even say this outperforms my original Canadian RL-cut pressing of Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, a True Star - which is really saying a lot! (Ironically, this album was also digitally mastered by Bob Ludwig...)Mind you, there are two interesting anomalies about this release: "Broken Drum" sounds bizarre, like it was upsampled from a 22khz digital file (half the sample rate of a CD), resulting in a ringing, low-resolution top end. It's almost... well, Windows 98-esque. Then again, it seems like it was mixed and mastered that way to begin with, as I found the Spotify version exhibits the same artifacts. I'm not complaining too much about it - it's just so odd to hear a track that's mastered like this cut to vinyl. The other anomaly is that the record is housed in a plain white paper inner sleeve with rounded corners, an odd mismatch to the staticky Pallas-pressed vinyl - records made of staticky European vinyl formulations are best paired with the poly-lined inners which they usually come with. I'm not sure if this plain paper sleeve is even original, given that I got my copy used, but if it is, I'd be surprised UMe didn't invest a little bit of extra capital in protecting the vinyl from additional static charge. I've read the Mutations reissue also has a plain paper sleeve. All things considered, this pressing otherwise sounds so impressive that I have no intention of upgrading to either of the original 45 rpm pressings. Recommended.

I just got a used copy and it has a plain-paper white inner with rounded corners. Can anyone who got this new confirm that this is what it originally came with? It seems odd that a staticky Pallas pressing would be paired up with such a sleeve, given that Pallas vinyl is best housed in poly-lined inners.

Sounds good. Side 1 is great, it has the best songs and the most space. Side 2 is crammed and does feel a bit flat. The 2xLP probably has more breathing room and stronger bass. But this album never had great dynamic range. I always thought the second half of the CD sounded flat. So is it the pressing or the music? Difficult to say. Overall I am satisfied with this available and affordable pressing of one of Beck's lesser efforts. Music: 7/10Pressing: 8/10

Music: 7/10Pressing: 8/10 MEllODrOnE claims this pressing is vastly superior to the EU 45 rpm, and that the US 45 rpm is only a marginal upgrade over the 2016 version. It does seem to depend on the stereo setup, as other people tend to say the EU 45 rpm version is superior to the 2016 release. It is a little confusing, but regardless, I think the sound quality of the 2016 version is superb. It's incredibly punchy, never lacking in bass, and very crisp. Haven't listened to side 2 in its entirety but I think the soundstage felt slightly narrower on ONE song only... side 2 still sounds impressively good to me given its length. Presently, I don't see any need to upgrade to the 45 rpm versions.
Sermak Light
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 2016 pressing, as it is virtually the same pressing as the original from 2005. Anyone who says the 2016 pressing is inferior is ignorant and needs to update their stylus and setup.
Faulkree
This is the original European pressing though. The original US pressing sounds far better. The 2016 reissue sounds great too also.
Manazar
How's the sound? I noticed that they crammed 2 LPs into 1 LP.
BeatHoWin
Thanks! That's what I was thinking as well. Bought a nice new copy of the 45rpm version.
Mikale
Timecode calculations yield side A at 22:17 and side B at 27:38. Side A borders the maximum acceptable timing for an LP side and side B clocks in at almost 30 minutes. Most likely bass and dB had to be cut down for this master in order to cram that much music in one side so in essence... it's likely going to suck sonics-wise. I'd rather try to find the 2-disc 45 rpm version.
Skrimpak
wow, this sounds simply beautiful...get those two pieces - you will love it!
Blackbrand
This is the version to have, cant imagine it sounding much better. Far superior to the new 2016 cut on 1 LP. Get this before it goes OOP.
Inabel
the song "Chain Reaction" have nottin to do with Black Sabbath
Anararius
seriously one of the best albums of ALL time (in my opinion). By far my favourite thing he has ever released.
Kabandis
Yeah, I would agree. A very solid Beck album, second only to Odelay.
Dainris
Can anyone confirm that the US pressing is actually 140 gram vs 180 gram for European?
Kamuro
my 2016 US press of Guero weighs in at 154 grams
Urllet
I cannot comment on the European version but I just received the U.S. version and it appears to be 140 grams.
Qus
His worst album in my opinion. Some of the songs are ok, but as a whole it feels like Odelay II minus the fun and the tunes.
Usic
The Information doesn't come close, it's too hair brained and unbalanced as a record. There are some good singles that are certainly catchy but as an album start to finish it's a little too out-there to be digested. I can put Guero on from track 1 to the end and never get tired of it.
Moralsa
His best album, in my opinion. The songs are all fantastic, and it flows like a true album should. It feels like Odelay and Mellow Gold had sex and had a record baby, plus the fun and the tunes!
Alsalar
absolutely- the follow up to this one is one of his best but people seem to revere this one over the information-
Fek
I'm playing this right now and it sounds so good.
Steelcaster
Yeah, it's hard to imagine the new pressing will exceed the sound quality of the a double 45rpm. Plus this has a much nicer laminated gatefold cover vs the new basic stock single pocket jacket.
Kaghma
I guess this album is now out of press as 2x12 as I have just read that it's been rereleased next month as a single album.
Folsa
Beck has yet again proven himself worthy with his rock music. Whether considered Indie, Alternative, Folk, whatever! His music will always remain one of my favourites. There is not a single song on this release I hate, except for "Farewell Ride" which is just weird; repeating the same thing over and over... Songs like "Clap Hands", "Hell Yes" and "Earthquake Weather" are actually quite bouncy songs, which at first made me think they should be Hip-Hop! For rock songs, they really don't sound rock, which is makes for a better release. Other songs like "Send A Message To Her", "Missing", "Girl" and "Que Onda Guero?" stick to the usual styles of folk/country rock. Not usually the one for country rock (because of The Dixie Chicks!!), Beck has actually made me start to appreciate it! Overall, because of Beck's variable taste in Rock music, he has been able to attract a vairety of different Rock fans around the world; including me. A job well done from Beck, and don't stop suprising us Beck!
