The Magic Position is the third studio album by English-Irish singer-songwriter Patrick Wolf. It was released on 26 February 2007. The album features collaborations with Marianne Faithfull and Edward Larrikin of Larrikin Love as well as backing vocals by Wolf's sister Jo Apps and also bass and alto clarinet instrumentation by Derek Apps. The album was preceded by the singles "Accident & Emergency" and "Bluebells".
Wolf began work on his next album, initially titled Battle, immediately after The Magic Position tour ended. The album was originally conceived as a political album. The focus then shifted to the depression experienced by Wolf during the tour. However, before entering the studio, he fell in love, changing the direction of the album again, and eventually providing enough material for two releases.

Much of the darkness from his previous two albums is lost, but even so, he still retains moments of a beautiful, poetic sadness. The album demonstrates a truly remarkable diversity of talents, from the upbeat, infinitely dance-able title track to the heartbreaking Bluebells. But every song features Patrick's beautiful voice and poetic lyricism. This is a fabulous CD.

However, The Magic Position slowly reveals itself as an album about, and possibly inspired by, fighting off depression. In Bluebells, Wolf admits to "going nowhere fast, A darker day has hold at last". Even Accident & Emergency's defiant thump of "What happens when you lose everything?, You just carry on and with a grin" has a slightly manic edge. Perhaps this is why The Magic Position sounds laboured by the end. However, it's difficult not to respond to such delirious joie de vivre.
