Vaughan Williams - Willow-Wood. Roderick Williams (baritone). Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, David Lloyd-Jones. Roderick Williams's beautifully phrased and enunciated singing in Willow-Wood proclaims him an heir to the great tradition of British baritones. BBC Music Magazine, November 2005, Mor. elease Date: 31st Oct 2005. Roderick Williams is perfectly cast: gentle warmth, virility, and nobility tinged with regret. A fine recording from the Liverpool forces, and that's a nice touch given Willow-Wood's history. The only thing cheap about the whole project is the price.

Suite for Viola and Orchestra: Group 1: Prelude. Flos Campi, Suite for Viola and Orchestra, The Running Set, Hymn Tune Preludes. Variations for Wind Band: Variation V. Moderato sostenuto. Husa, Copland, Vaughan Williams, Hindemith. Five Mystical Songs - Antiphon - Stephen Roberts, baritone; SinfoniaChorus, Alan Fearon. Hickox Conducts Vaughan Williams.

The 1951 choral cantata Sons of Light, with words by Williams's wife Ursula, is almost equally unfamiliar, though it did appear on LP; the Whitman setting Toward the Unknown Region is a choral repertory piece, while the orchestral Five Variants, beautifully shaped here by David Lloyd-Jones and the RLPO, is a quietly effective study in variation technique.

Roderick Williams, baritone Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir/David Lloyd-Jones Naxos . 57798 61:51. Lloyd-Jones' splendid reading and Roderick Williams' rich baritone voice make this an essential disc for the Vaughan Williams enthusiast, even if little else of consequence were being offered here – but plenty more riches crowd this CD. Toward the Unknown Region is fairly standard Vaughan Williams, at least in England. The popular Five Variants of Dives (pronounced Dye-vess) and Lazarus is given a splendid performance by the Liverpool players and Lloyd-Jones, their reading as good as any I've encountered. What a fine work this is.

Symphony No. 5 in D major by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was written between 1938 and 1943. In style it represents a shift away from the violent dissonance of Symphony No. 4, and a return to the more romantic style of the earlier Pastoral Symphony. It is also noteworthy as perhaps the quietest symphony Vaughan Williams ever wrote, with only a very few passages rising even to a forte. The texture throughout the work is strongly dominated by the strings.
