The 2014 VA album found The Last Bison returning to their independent roots, having self-produced the project in collaboration with Media House Music. To capture the sounds on The Last Bison’s 2014 VA (pronounced Virginia,) the band spent many days and nights in an old A-frame cabin. The cabin, called the Wigwam sits on a summer camp on the edge of the Great Dismal Swamp near the band’s home in Chesapeake, Virginia. SÜDA is a continuance of the spirit that birthed Inheritance and VA and moves the music into technicolor. The focus of writing revolved around the concept of the time singer Ben Hardesty spent as a child in the rainforests of Bolivia with his missionary parents. The songs focus on themes of longing, times remembered, and the desire for spiritual and tonal catharsis.
Inheritance, the major-label debut from Chesapeake, Virginia-based indie folk outfit Last Bison, falls somewhere between Fleet Foxes' expansive, harmony-drenched chamber pop, Mumford & Sons' stadium-blasted folk-rock, Hem's measured, rural Americana, and 16 Horsepower's penchant for turning even the most innocuous lyric into a crossbow bolt of fire and brimstone.
The Last Bison, formerly known as Bison, is an indie folk band that formed in Chesapeake, Virginia. The Last Bison originally dubbed their sound "mountain-top chamber music" combining elements of alternative indie-folk with classical sensibilities. Their first album Quill was released independently in September 2011 and received critical praise noting the bands complex arrangements, refined lyrics and vocal harmonies.

The Last Bison is great for the bluegrass and folk inclined among us. Also the classical lovers. Really anyone could enjoy listening to the intricate patterns of instrumentation and vocals that Ben Hardesty creates and performs with his friends and family. I'm not usually into the indie side of music (I'm more into the oldies or the techno), but Inheritance really impressed me. There's a genuine, heartfelt quality to the lyrics and the performance that really strikes home with listeners. There are some cool instrumentals and lyrics, and a few of the tracks (like "Dark am I" and "Switzerland") have been stuck in my head for days now.
