2012–2017 is the third studio album by American electronic music artist Nicolas Jaar, under the moniker . Against All Logic), later referred to only as Against All Logic. It was released on February 17, 2018, by Other People.
Jaar snuck his latest album 2012 - 2017 out under his . L (Against All Logic) moniker last week, and it is interesting in part because it is the first Jaar release in some time in which many sounds sit in familiar places and arrive at familiar times. Kicks, snares, and hi-hats assemble in predictable motifs. Pianos gallop, because that is what pianos do at 128 beats per minute. There’s plenty to unpack here, as there is with all of Jaar’s work, but if you wanted to simplify things you could call 2012 - 2017 his house album, in that Jaar imposes upon himself the conventions and requirements of traditional house music. This is something Jaar seemingly confesses with the title of the loping first track: This Old House Is All I Have. That opening sets the table for what is, by some margin, the sunniest and most ebullient song in Jaar’s discography: I Never Dream.
L (Against All Logic).
Always active, Jaar was working concurrently on several projects at once, the least visible of which was his semi-anonymous Against All Logic (. Flying way under the radar of Jaar's enamored critics, the project issued several springy house tracks before 2012/2017, a collection of 11 songs that arrived almost completely unannounced in early 2018. While not totally divorced from the style Jaar became best-known for on his solo albums, .
Against All Logic - 2012-2017 The only time I've seen Nicolas Jaar DJ, in Seattle in 2013, I was surprised at what I heard. He wasn't playing, say, avant-garde club music or the cerebral material found on his Essential Mix or RA podcast. Now that music has been compiled into an album, 2012-2017, released last month without warning. Unfortunately, it paints an unflattering picture of the project as house and disco pastiche with only brief flashes of inspiration. 2012-2017 is a grab bag of dead-simple bangers mixed in with typical Jaar weirdness.

2012-2017 is a marvelous album that cements Jaar’s status as one of the most versatile and interesting figures in the scene. While 2012-2017 is a collection of tracks that has been written and recorded in a fairly lengthy timespan (5 years), the album comes together more focused and to the point than any of his other full-length projects to date. While sampling has always been a staple of Jaar’s work, 2012-2017 features an incredibly playful and creative use of (especially vocal) samples, that hasn’t been present in his previous works. Know You and Now You Got Me Hooked are examples for this new direction, both feature colorful samples that Jaar effortlessly twists and turns ever so slightly over the duration of the song, creating two of the bouncy and exciting tracks on the entire LP. In these moments, one is almost tempted to liken 2012-2017 to works by plunderphonic greats such as The Avalanches.

2012 - 2017 is one hour and seven minutes of sample-heavy dance tracks-eleven in total. Those who are deeply inquisitive about music will have a field day on WhoSampled finding vocal stems from David Axelrod, The Delfonics and Kanye West. Those who aren’t interested in that will still find an album which has an instant impact as Jaar substitutes avant-garde dystopian techno with the most off kilter time signatures for something much more predictable.
