If I Could Only Remember My Name is the debut solo album by David Crosby, released in February 1971 on Atlantic Records. It was one of four high-profile albums released by each member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the wake of their chart-topping Déjà Vu album (along with Stephen Stills, Songs for Beginners, and After the Gold Rush). It peaked at on the Billboard 200 and earned a RIAA gold certification for selling over 500,000 copies in the United States.

David Crosby's debut solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name is a one-shot wonder of dreamy but ominous California ambience. The songs range from brief snapshots of inspiration (the angelic chorale-vocal showcase on "Orleans" and the a cappella closer, "I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here") to the full-blown, rambling western epic "Cowboy Movie," and there are absolutely no false notes struck or missteps taken

Blown out/over limited remaster (all versions tested except HDCD), steer clear. Original CD sounds much better, loads more dynamic range etc. Missed opportunity.

Thanks for all the info Stephen. For sure I would love to chat about it all, I sent you a PM on here last night, and will email you later today!

by the way, how were you able to procure and examine the 'stems' from the DVD 5.1 files? I thought they were protected in some way.I'd like to continue this conversation with you privately. My email address is at http://barncard.com

by the way, the original CD was done (with my involvement) by the late Bill Dooley in the 90s on the old Sony Start system - that uses the ancient 3/4" U matic video for storage. That's actually what got sent to the plant. I was not able to be at the later mastering sessions or choose the mastering engineer. Atlantic did whatever they wanted. As far as the original LP, I was also present for the mastering for that one back in 1971 - by the great Bob McCleod at Artisan. here's the stamp on the lead-out:https://www.analogplanet.com/images/1215Artisan.JPG

My apologies. The pictures tell the tale. I am truly HORRIFIED.I didn't think I had to be on the lookout for hypercompression at the time I turned the files over to the mastering eng in 2004. The ref DVDs that came back sounded great.( I'll have to take another look at those refs )Just another tale in my interaction with Rhino records on this project.I hate Rhino. They really screwed up this release.1. NO mention of surround in the advertising or promo. It was they were ashamed to mention it.2. HDCD was screwed up- it worked but the 'light' didn't come on3. A "video" was promised in promotion that didn't exist.4. The so called "photo gallery" was crap from agencies and had no relation to the album event. (I was screaming for someone to contact me about the packaging for 2 years with no response) - I know of the existence of MANY photos nobody has seen.5. I had interviews, endorsements, etc set up for the immediate release of the package yet they waited 2 years before releasing.6. and the biggest sin of all.... They release BOTH the IICORMN set and Crosby's Box "Voyage" on the same freaking day. And my bonus track on IICORMN - Kids and Dogs, was also offered on the Crosby set... MIXED BY SOMEBODY ELSE!!! WTF???I AM FURIOUS ABOUT THIS. I need to get in touch with the Mastering Engineer Steve Hall. He's retired now up north in Oregon raising Llamas. I have to find and prove that there was some more tampering after Hall turned in the finals. The only hope is that I can somehow get a HD Tracks or perhaps a 2021 50th anniversary edition with Plangent processing and a real mix of the PERRO tapes as a bonus. It probably won't be a DVD that's for sure. That's counting on Rhino continuing to release physical product at all, and not certain. As you may know, UNIVERSAL has dropped releasing any physical product at all... only streams. And of course there's no monetary incentive for Crosby to care at this point.

I won't post copyrighted audio clips, but here are screen shots from the two versions, with file data shown clearly in the box on the right. If you subjectively volume match the original CD with the 2006 reissue, and A/B between them, you can clearly hear a lot of nasty distortion on the reissue that is not present on the original. I am sure you took great care, it's your baby after all, but something went pretty wrong, possibly in the mastering. This is from the CD version, but all the hi-res versions from this release are just as crushed, even the individual stems from the 5.1 version.http://hermetechmastering.com/OriginalCD.pnghttp://hermetechmastering.com/2006CD.png

I am just being honest here, I think the remaster is terrible, and way prefer the original CD. No need to make things personal calling my ears into question, I've been mastering professionally for over a decade, am listening on ATC monitors in a treated room etc.

Really? Pages full of people feeling the same way on the Steve Hoffman forum. not just me. Would you like me to provide screen shots from RX7 Advanced and audio clips of the different versions that clearly show the limiting distortion visually and audibly?
