The Future Sound of London (often abbreviated to FSOL) is a British electronic music group composed of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans. Although often associated with ambient music, Cobain and Dougans usually resist being typecast into any one particular genre

Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans met in the mid 80s while studying electronics at university in Manchester, England. This 2002 release by The Future Sound of London is excellent, albeit very different from previous albums. This is a good thing by the way; this outfit is very creative and I am glad to see them "mixing things up". Speaking of mixing things up, the duo that comprises the core of The Future Sound of London has been very active in a side project called Amorphous Androgynous. The Isness could be considered an album by Amorphous Androgynous. Speaking of which, the music on The Isness reminds me a lot of the album Celestial Ocean (Brainticket, 1973), with the exception that Brainticket used more in the way of avant-garde styles. In spite of the references to earlier genres however, The Isness still sounds fresh. Although subtle aspects of earlier Future Sound of London albums poke though here and there, the overall sound is very different.

The Isness takes the strange sounds of Lifeforms and combines them with 70’s era Progressive Rock and mellow Psychdelia to create one of the more original albums I’ve heard in awhile.

User reviews
On The Isness, Future Sound Of London/AA completely scrap their sound signature for an entirely Floydian-Neo-Psychedelia feel of an album. From start to finish you're taken on a wild journey that tributes both The Wall, and The Final Cut. Yet this albums undertone is supremely electronic, it still sounds flawless in its form. Going from the Synth-based "Elysian Feels" to the Banjo-lead "Go Tell It To The Trees Egghead" is only a one song difference, yet it showcases just how versatile the instrumental range is in this album. I'd say the only downfall is the atrocious titles.
I've been looking around. My copy has the same catalognumber as this one, but it doesn't have a 32 page booklet! and the track names are mispressed: Goodbye Sky (Reprise) and The Galaxial Pharmaceutical are switched on the sleeve and on the 4-page booklet. My version comes in a digipack actually
