The Symphony No. 48 'Vision of Andromeda' (1982) purports to be an ode to the beautiful asterism that the Hubble telescope has especially revealed in all its majesty, and the symphony is a magnificent tribute. Hovhaness lets himself go in the 4-part symphony: sweeping melodies, characteristic exoticism, ethereal passages, and usage of a wide range of instruments. Maestro Schwarz has for years been a champion of American music including that of Howard Hanson, David Diamond - and Alan Hovhaness. He has recorded numerous CDs of these composers, first on Delos, and many of which have been re-released on Naxos. Gerard Schwarz has long been a supporter of Alan Hovhaness, and this release is just the latest in several Schwarz has done of his music. Published on May 19, 2015.

Hovhaness: Symphony No. 48 "Vision of Andromeda". Greg Banaszak, Eastern Music Festival Orchestra, Gerard Schwarz. Primary Artist, Orchestra.

Alan Hovhaness’ Symphony No. 48 is subtitled Vision of Andromeda, and anyone who has seen the Hubble photos of our neighboring galaxy knows just how gorgeous that must be. For years I used one of those magnificent vistas as my computer’s screen saver. This four-movement symphony, lasting just under half an hour, is typical Hovhaness. There are lovely, modal fugues in the second movement and finale; evocative, vaguely oriental melodies all over the place; luscious string chorales, and interludes for bells and tam-tam. Check out the opening of the finale (sound clip). Fabulous, isn’t it? Does.

Symphony "Vision of Andromeda", Op. 355. Greg Banaszak, soprano saxophone Eastern Music Festival Orchestra/Gerard Schwarz Naxos American Classics . 59755. You have to admire the mastery of form and confidence on display – in itself a thrill – and the Eastern Music Festival Orchestra plays very well. They are a group of staff and professionals that work together for only five weeks each year, but no apologies need to be made. They play cohesively and intelligently. In the Symphony the distinctively "mystical" qualities of the composer's music are here in full force. This is its first recording, a symphony "Inspired by the wonders and mysteries of astronomy". It certainly evokes a sense of spaciousness and awe, though how "celestial" the work is remains entirely up to you.
