Early Birds, a collection of the Icelandic band's first experiments, makes for a strange listen in 2012, not exactly unpleasant but far from satisfying as a whole. Perhaps that's unsurprising, given the often sketchy nature of the material, a band's early attempts at finding their sound. If anything dates Early Birds, it's the drums. A good percentage of these tracks are built around the hyper-antic programming of drill'n'bass, a sound that peaked in terms of creativity a few years before Múm even started making music. It may seem cruel to compare most electronic acts to Richard D. James, but up against something like "Girl/Boy Song", a very audible influence on Múm here, the flailing of the drums on tracks like "Bak Þitt Er Sem Rennibraut" and "Insert Coin" sound like a thin and unconvincing take on the real deal, all of the speed.

Múm's Early Birds lives up to its name, gathering the first recordings of the band that would help pioneer the music known as "indietronic" a few years later. Given that Early Birds is an hour-plus odds-and-sods compilation, it's not surprising that it doesn't flow like a proper album, but it does show that Múm knew what they were doing from the start. This comprehensive audio sketchbook will please fans who want to trace the evolution of one of the most electronic pop groups of the 2000s.

Early Birds’ is a tribute to these early years and the work-raw and varied in nature-that they begat. Though there is a very definite melodic thread running through the music on ‘Early Birds’, the compilation is a varied one; evidence of the depth of the band’s varied interests as they were starting out. It begins on a vibrant and upbeat note, and retains that eclectic, bubbly sound throughout.

Listen free to múm – Early Birds (Bak þitt Er Sem Rennibraut, Póst Póstmaður and more). It is the year 1998: What might have been the first decade in the history of pop music that was characterized by an overwhelming sense of fragmentation is drawing to a close. Anything goes: guitars & electro, retro sounds or wicked forays into the digitized future. Pop hasn’t sounded this optimistic and upbeat in a while, and there’s currently no need for Weltschmerz in Indie anymore

Early Birds is nearly entirely instrumental, but the term instrumental is somewhat of a misnomer. The album’s songs see the duo experimenting heavily with a dazzling collection of largely unidentifiable field recordings and electronic manipulations. Sparse guitar parts and other limited sections of traditional instrumentation are interspersed to give context to Tynes and Smárason’s experimentations, but the magic of Early Birds lies in the mesmerizing sonic tableaus that run through the entire album. Though not all of the tracks on the album were fashioned into future releases-or have even been heard before-fans of Múm will find the entirety of the Early Birds a fascinating window into the band’s origins.
