Anton Karas (7 July 1906 – 10 January 1985) was a Viennese zither player and composer, best known for his internationally famous 1948 soundtrack to Carol Reed's The Third Man, which came about as a result of a chance meeting. Born in Vienna, one of five children of a factory worker, Anton Karas was already keen on music as a child. He wanted to become a band leader, which because of the family's financial situation was impossible

Anton Karas and his zither music transcends other musicians who plays this instrument. he has the magic and the touch none can mather. The CD begins with a few of his own written standards, then branches out into other venues, all ringing true with the classic style he had. One can feel themselves being drawn back to old Vienna when hearing this tunes. join those of us who know this artist well and prepare to begin a "love affair" with this man's music. One person found this helpful. The Third Man Theme on these CD's is the original. If you are into zither music, this 2 CD compilation by the master is probably a great find. Karas is hard to compare, because I don't think I have ever heard any other zither player before hearing Karas in the Orson Wells movie of the same name.
