The Kingston Trio got serious on this, their attempt to compete in the new era of topical folk songs. The opening track, "The Patriot Game," is a dead giveaway, introducing songs about the lot of coal miners ("Coal Tattoo"), the less fortunate among us ("Hobo's Lullaby"), Woody Guthrie's "Deportee," social justice ("Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream"), and the deceased John F. Kennedy ("Song for. a Friend").

Time to think (and pray): kingston trio founder bob shane facing serious illness. The term "musical hero" has been invoked so much over the decades, that it at times seems to have lost its impact. But one individual for whom that term most definitely applies in abundance is the beloved folk rock pioneer and sole surviving founding member of the Kingston Trio, Robert Castle "Bob Shane" Schoen
Artist: The Kingston Trio. Album: New Frontier/Time To Think. LYRICS FROM "COAL TATTOO" I've been coal miner all of my life. I said, "That's the blueprint left by the coal. A little more and I'd have been dead. As a look back at the somewhat less mechanized days of coal mining, "Coal Tattoo" fits well into the Kingston Trio's general rock-tinged folk. The song is on the double-album CD reissue of "New Frontier" and "Time to Think," which features some of KT's most serious-and best-songwriting and playing efforts
