Below the Salt is the fourth studio album by Steeleye Span and their first after they joined the Chrysalis label. The album takes medieval influence and combines it with the band's British folk rock style. The lineup on the album includes Bob Johnson and Rick Kemp making their debuts in the band. By this point, Ashley Hutchings had left the band, leaving Tim Hart and Maddy Prior as the only remaining founding members.
Below The Salt is a music studio album recording by STEELEYE SPAN (Prog Related/Progressive Rock) released in 1972 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. This is the great Steeleye Span's fourth studio album and in addition to furthering their lovely communion of traditional British folk and blustery hard blues, it was the first release without founder/bassist Ashley Hutchings. Filling the gap left by he and Martin Carthy was the bass of Rick Kemp and guitar of Bob Johnson.
Producer – Jerry Boys, Steeleye Span. Initially German version comes in a laminated gatefold cover and wears the green Chrysalis label design. There is a missprinted cat on the label side B. Squared D for Deutschland (Germany) behind the cat on the rear. On rear cover and label A3 is just denoted as Jigs. Complete stated at the inside cover. Recorded at Sound Techniques, Chelsea, London.
With this album, Steeleye Span came to the fore of the British folk/rock movement and made serious headway with American listeners. Though it begins with the precious yet jaunty "Spotted Cow" followed by the forlorn "Rosebud In June" and then some snappy jigs, the songs become progressively complex thereafter. I bought this album back in 1976, after hearing several Steeleye Span songs on the local folk/rock radio station. I doubt if they were the first band to set medieval songs to modern tunes, but they're certainly one of the best. Innovative, fresh fun songs that'll have you humming them for hours afterward.
Below the Salt is the fourth studio album by Steeleye Span and their first after they joined the Chrysalis label. The album was recorded in May and June 1972 at Sound Techniques studios in Chelsea, London. All songs on the album are traditional, adapted by Steeleye Span.
The most successful of all Steeleye Span lineups, with Bob Johnson and Rick Kemp in place of Martin Carthy and Ashley Hutchings, makes its debut on what could be their best album. There's not a weak note here, and all of its has a harder, more muscular sound courtesy of Kemp and Johnson, matched to impeccable vocals and uniformly excellent material.
