D'Ambrosio was born into a musical family and took piano lessons beginning at the age of six. In 1958 she spent a year at the Boston Museum School, then pursued a career in painting and music. She rejected an offer to tour with John Coltrane in 1966. Over ten years later she recorded her debut album with her husband, pianist Eddie Higgins. She appeared on the radio program Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland in 1994.

Soft toned D'Ambrosio is mostly heard accompanying herself or with a small combo that suits her warm and understated interpretations of the classics, that follows in the tradition of . Blossom Dearie and predates later pianists/singers like Diana Krall. Married jazz pianist, arranger Eddie Higgins in 1988.

Her singing has punch, variety, and dimension, and her phrasing is creative and expertly constructed. Kevin Eubanks' guitar contributions are concise, thoughtful, and without any gimmicks or wasted riffs. D'Ambrosio and Harold Danko interact smoothly, and his piano backing is delicate and supportive.
