Apache" is an instrumental written by English composer Jerry Lordan. The original version was by Bert Weedon, but Lordan did not like the version. The British rock group the Shadows recorded "Apache" in June 1960 and released it the next month. It topped the UK Singles Chart for five weeks. In 1961, Danish jazz guitarist Jørgen Ingmann's cover of "Apache" (which he recorded in the fall of 1960) went to No. 2 in the US and No. 2 in Canada.
The first Incredible Bongo Band album included a cover of "Apache", an instrumental tune written by Jerry Lordan and originally made popular in the UK by The Shadows, and in the United States and Canada by Jørgen Ingmann. They recorded the song at Can-Base Studios in Vancouver to take advantage of Canadian content laws, which had helped promote their previous hit, "Bongo Rock. Subsequently, many of the Incredible Bongo Band's other releases were sampled by hip-hop producers, and the "Apache" break also remains a staple of many producers in drum and bass. The song received popular attention again in 2001 when it was featured in an ad for an Acura SUV.
Funny how Apache is getting airplay again on the Indie Stations. It's deserved and a whole new audience can appreciate great instrumentals. That is where I first heard of this band. it's just plain fun to listen to and it's hard not to move on some of them. The first 3 are phenomenal to listen to in a row. Really sets a mood for a party or a party feeling. If you liked the original Preston Epps hit, you'll like the Incredible Bongo Band's version. A couple of cuts sound dated, but most have a retro-rock vibe that holds up today. Great album for a road trip.

Incredible Bongo Band. Issued in 1973 by record executive and bongo player Michael Viner and a team of studio musicians, this collection of jazz-funk instrumentals has been strip-mined by sample-hungry producers for decades. It's not hard to hear why: Nearly every track on Bongo Rock has a memorable break, from the piping military horns at the center of "Bongo Rock" to the drum kit solo near the end of "Last Bongo in Belgium. Of course, the epochal "Apache" needs no introduction. The 2006 reissue includes several cuts from a follow-up album, The Return of the Incredible Bongo Band.
