On "The Old Believer", the Moth elects neither to dazzle nor to entertain – dazzling and entertaining as it ultimately is by the 20th spin. An Ach. was a breathtaking statement of purpose from a hungry band with everything to prove; it needed to be vigorous, vital and downright immediate.

The main problem is it doesn't really seem like anything new. To call it Ache for the Distance Lite wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Atlas Moth plays with the same template, but the riffs are less heavy and more melodic. The production is definitely more suited to rock and the new drummer settles into a mid-paced rock plod for pretty much the entire endurance of the album. While Believer isn't the best instance of the tri-guitar attack at its most impact, there's tons of good melodic interplay and understated leads.

The Old Believer 07. City Of Light 08. Wynona 09. Hesperian 10. Blood Will Tell. In the face of all odds this unusual album won't sit idly in your mind. Seemingly misshapen in delivery, this is atypical of a hybrid of sludge and stoner metal and it leaves a clear and distinctive impression. It's often at a metal crossroads that particularly creative sounds and fresh ingenuity emerges. At what point does this album cease to be sludge and begin to be stoner, or vice versa? This really isn't a valid question in the case of The Atlas Moth, as they blend the two so closely here that the fundamentals of either sub-genre become seamlessly unified under the one style. It actually comes across as necessarily rough, yet not without a rich sense of melody to the song writing.

To anyone who ordered from Profound Lore's webstore once the corner bend thing came up: how severe was your bend? I'm wondering if it's worth the extra $14 to get a colored release that'll be in better condition, if it isn't too bad then I'll probably get the version on there.
