The Alban Berg Quartett was a string quartet founded in Vienna, Austria in 1970, named after Alban Berg. The Berg Quartet was founded in 1970 by four young professors of the Vienna Academy of Music, and made its debut in the Vienna Konzerthaus in autumn 1971. The widow of the composer Alban Berg, Helene, attended an early private concert after which she gave her consent for the quartet to use her husband's name.

I went immediately to Op. 135 and found it marvelous in concept, execution and recording. Because these string quartets rank as one of the most startling, dialectic, existential journeys in all of art, no one recorded collection can have the final word, just as no single exposure to the music can reap the rewards awaiting.

And even the Italiano, the Végh, and the earlier Berg could only equal what the latter Berg achieves in this set. Recorded live in Vienna in 1989, the second Berg set is even more concentrated - listen to the Fugue that opens the C sharp minor quartet - and even more passionate - listen to the Cavatina at the center of the B flat major quartet. Better yet, the tone is more beautiful - listen to the Lento assai e cantante tranquillo in the F major quartet. And, best of all, the interpretations are more luminous - listen to the coda of the Molto adagio of the A minor quartet.

The Alban Berg Quartett is at the centre of this Mozart collection – quartets, quintets and a chamber version of the piano concerto K 414. The pleasures that await the listener are evoked by Gramophone magazine: The K 515 and K 516 Quintets are a real treat; the first movement of the G minor has an unusual urgency, and the lovely, balanced phrasing emphasises the singing, melodic nature of the music
