Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster. In the end, Scrooge becomes the perfect consumer. In other words, in A Christmas Carol, spending money on consumer goods is an investment (a wise investment) in friendship, in human society, and in life itself. Scrooge really seems to hang on to this lesson.

First Act It was Christmas time in London. There was a man named Ebenezer Scrooge. He was a hard worker man, but at the same time he was a miserable, greedy, cruel, and stingy person, who didn& know what generosity meant. A day before Christmas, Scrooge and his clerk, Robert "Bob" Cratchit, were working in the office. Scrooge as always, was counting his money, while Bob was counting the minutes to go back home to his family. Bob Cratchit: (whispering) I am so cold in this office, but Mr. Scrooge doesn't want to turn on the heater, he says that it's a waste of money

Slide 4 A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Overview-Ebenezer Scrooge, a tight-fisted and bitter man, is visited by three spirits to bring about his redemption before his death. He learns to love his fellow man after being shown the love and generosity that symbolizes Christmas. Slide 5 A Christmas Carol Jacob Marley, Scrooges partner has been dead, 7 years to the day that our story begins. The first scene unfolds in the cold cheerless office of Scrooges counting house. Slide 8 A Christmas Carol Pay careful attention to the three ghosts. Each message has a specific effect on Scrooge. What does the ghost of Christmas past remind Scrooge of? Whose generous heart touches Scrooge in the present? What does Scrooges future hold if he continues to be greedy and self-absorbed?

Scrooge is shown his own past, and the sight of his neglected childhood Christmasses begins to explain why he began his downward spiral into misery. Scrooge is scared and regretful when he sees the vivid images of the Christmas Yet to Come, which predictably leaves him dying alone. His reversal, from the anti-Christmas figure to the spirit of Christmas shows clearly the message of hope and forgiveness Dickens intended for his readers.
