referencing The Chopin Project, CD, Album, 0028948114863. As I got older I began to gravitate towards classical music again. It’s not that I appreciate it any more than when I was a child. Having consumed every single work by Ólafur Arnalds since his 2007 début, I’m by no means surprised to find this Icelandic composer make his way from the modern classical albums on the beloved Erased Tapes to the award-winning film scores on Milan and finally to contemporary classical works on Mercury Classics. What’s more fascinating is his pairing with Alice Sara Ott, a German-Japanese pianist who promptly demonstrates her talents with Piano Sonata No. 3: Largo on the Chopin Project.

Olafur Arnalds & Alice Sara Ott. 2015. Modern classical Neoclassical Classical Ambient Electronic. Piano Sonata N. ; Largo. Nocturne in C Sharp Minor. Eyes Shut - Nocturne in C Minor.

This week's entry in the ng-heard-before sweepstakes comes from Icelandic electronic musician and composer Ólafur Arnalds and German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott, whose recording of Chopin waltzes inspired the project. What's here are recordings of Chopin piano compositions, plus original compositions by Arnalds based on motifs from Chopin. Arnalds' pieces employ his own electronic keyboard textures, plus a live string quintet. On top of this, the pianos are vintage instruments hunted down in Reykjavik, and the ambience, if you will, was manipulated by recording in various venues and with various microphones there.

LAFUR ARNALDS and ALICE SARA OTT‘s just released contemporary re-compositions of Chopin (Out now via Mercury Classics) have ruffled the feathers of the baldest musical birds. Before their informal show in Konzerthaus, Berlin, the three of us schemed on imperfection, how to best record your pianist’s breath, and why there is hope for humanity in music. I did consider that on my way here. To call the live performance of this album ‘hypocritical’ would be mean, but in an essence it i. : Yes. True!

User reviews
The same problem... Beautiful piano music by Sara Ott and Ólafur - but awful quality and terrible cracling on both sides of vinyl album!!
Just a few minor pops last track side 2, nothing serious. Guess I am lucky...
Sent mine back, such a beautiful album, so sad that the quality is so bad.
I bought now 3 copies and given back 2. Unfortunately, all have a very poor quality and crackling.
I actually heard two exemplaries on vinyl and so far i found it crackling repetitivly at some points, does anyone have the same problem? (Two exemplaries on two different turntables)
Late replay but the same problems. Very bad quality. Even voices can be heardEDIT: Have seen that i've already replied :-)
I'm experiencing the same thing! A bit disappointing but still pleasant to listen to when you get over it.
Same... Even voices can be heard...
