Always interested in blending jazz with folk and pop, the guitarist does just that, focusing heavily on the folk end of things on One Quiet Night. Featuring a nice afterglow interpretation of Norah Jones' hit "Don't Know Why" and an unexpected reinterpretation of "Ferry Cross the Mersey" which turns the Gerry & the Pacemakers classic into a poignant lament, the album also showcases Metheny as a melodic pop composer.

One Quiet Night is Pat Metheny's third contribution to that legacy. His first foray into solo ground came with his 1979 album New Chautauqua, a project consisting of overdubbed guitars. In 1992 he came out with the wonderful (but often reviled) Zero Tolerance For Silence. On this latest offering, Metheny gives us exactly what the title promises-one quiet night of Pat Metheny playing alone in his home studio on his unusually-tuned baritone acoustic guitar. The results are a shimmering delicate gem. One Quiet Night was recorded with no overdubs and produced without the usual fuss that the perfectionist normally brings to a recording session, andthis method is a wise choice on his part.

One Quiet Night is a fusion music album recording by PAT METHENY released in 2003 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette. 1. One Quiet Night (5:01) 2. Song for the Boys (4:31) 3. Don't Know Why (3:08) 4. North to South, East to West (12:03) 12.

One Quiet Night finds Pat on his own with a baritone guitar (basically an acoustic guitar in an extended 'Nashville' tuning). Recorded mostly at home, solo with a single mic (the first time he's done a truly 'solo' record), it's an unsurprisingly intimate, hushed affair. There are a few covers; Keith Jarrett's 'My Song", Norah Jones' "Don't Know Why" and most suprisingly, Gerry and the Pacemakers' "Ferry Cross The Mersey'. The rest are Metheny originals; some improvised, some familiar ("Last Train Home"). Late at night, with the rain beating against the windows, this is the kind of record that can send you to bed feeling that all's right with the world. In times like these, that's no bad thing.
