Love Is a Fabulous Thing (Original Album Plus Bonus Tracks). Les Baxter and His Orchestra. Les Baxter (March 14, 1922 – January 15, 1996) was an American musician and composer. Baxter studied piano at the Detroit Conservatory before moving to Los Angeles for further studies at Pepperdine College. Abandoning a concert career as a pianist, he turned to popular music as a singer. At the age of 23 he joined Mel Tormé's Mel-Tones, singing on Artie Shaw records such as "What Is This Thing Called Love?".

Leslie Thompson "Les" Baxter (March 14, 1922 – January 15, 1996) was an American musician and composer. After becoming well known as an arranger and composer for swing bands in the 1940s, he developed his own style of world music-influenced easy listening music, known as exotica, during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1953 he scored his first movie, the sailing travelogue Tanga Tika. With his own orchestra, he released a number of hits including "Ruby" (1953), "Unchained Melody" (1955), "The Poor People of Paris" (1956) and is remembered for a version of "Sinner Man" (1956), definitively setting the sound with varying tempos, orchestral flourishes, and wailing background vocals. Unchained Melody" was the first million seller for Baxter, and was awarded a gold disc.

The album catches Christian away from the highly-structured surroundings of his rent-paying gigs, the Benny Goodman sextet and orchestra, jamming with fellow revolutionaries Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie. The LP consists of two, hard-driving, nine-minute workouts. Another timeless song, another big crossover hit, ‘Love Is Strange’ was written by Bo Diddley and was recorded by him in late 1955 but not released until 2007 (on CD only). The song was substantially reconfigured by Mickey & Sylvia, whose version spawned several great covers, including one by the Everly Brothers. While Les Baxter and Martin Denny were in the mid-1950s exploring earthbound exoticism, Sun Ra had already embarked on an off-planet trajectory.

His 1950 album, "Music Out of the Moon," featured the theremin and was probably the best-selling theremin album of all time-and also founded the "space" school of exotica. In 1951, he did the same for the "jungle" school of exotica with his landmark "Ritual of the Savage" LP, for which he wrote the theme song of exotica: "Quiet Village. Brazil Now, Crescendo GNP 2036.
