Johann Sebastian Bach, Gerhard Gnann, Gächinger Kantorei, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, Helmuth Rilling - A Book Of Chorale-Setting For Johann Sebastian: Trust In God, Cross And Consolation - Justification And Penance - Dying, Death And Eternity - In The Evening ‎(2xCD, Album).

Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart. Gerhard Gnann (Organ); Michael Behringer (Harpsichord). Bach wrote a huge number of chorale settings, some of which can be found in his great Passions, oratorios, motets and, of course, throughout his cantatas. These Protestant hymns provided invaluable teaching material, in addition to focal points for his church writings. Rilling's 'A Book of Chorale Settings for Johann Sebastian'. Paul Johnson wrote (January 15, 2010): I have long puzzled over that block of BWV numbers which catalogue all of the short chorale settings. It's the one area of Bach's music that I have never investigated and, in truth, didn't really understand (in terms of what these pieces are and how they 'fit' with the rest of his work).

The Bach Collegium Stuttgart was founded in 1965 by Helmuth Rilling as the instrumental partner for the Gächinger Kantorei, and has been administered and funded by the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart since 1981. The group’s complete recording of the sacred cantatas and oratorios of Johann Sebastian Bach, released during the composer’s 300th anniversary year in 1985, raised its profile as a leading Baroque music ensemble performing in a d style. Nevertheless, the Bach Collegium mainly performs on modern instruments. In this way, it can constantly expand its repertoire.

Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (How beautifully the morning star shines), BWV 1, is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed it in 1725 in Leipzig for the feast of the Annunciation and led the first performance on 25 March 1725, which that year fell on Palm Sunday. It is a chorale cantata, based on Philipp Nicolai's hymn "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern" (1599).
