Chorus of The Vienna State Opera Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Clemens Krauss – conductor. Die Zigeunerbaron is a three-act operetta composed by Austrian composer Johann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 June 3, 1899). The libretto is written by Ignatz Schnitzer in German based on "Saffi" by Maurice Jocai. It was premiered in Vienna, Theater an der Wien, on October 24, 1885. The Gypsy Baron is still performed today. The gypsies pledge their loyalty to Barinkay and uses this to claim he is noble a gypsy baron. Barinkay has a change of heart. He now wants to marry the gypsy Sffi, and not Arsena.

The Gypsy Baron (German: Der Zigeunerbaron) is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II which premiered at the Theater an der Wien on 24 October 1885. Its libretto was by the author Ignaz Schnitzer and in turn was based on Sáffi by Mór Jókai. During the composer's lifetime, the operetta enjoyed great success, second only to the popularity of Die Fledermaus. The scoring and the nature of Strauss's music have also led many music critics to consider this work a comic opera or a lyric opera.

This idiomatic recording of Strauss' Fledermaus, boasting a stellar cast, will be issued complete on Double Decca later this year (2004). Failing that, there is the 1951 Clemens Krauss with the desired echt Wienerisch cast and company again headed by the wonderful Hilde Güden - and, as a bonus, a 1951 "New Year Concert". In fact the only out-and-out failure of this wonderful work I know is the 1951 Met version in a very dated English translation with some sadly worn singing from the principals (Richard Tucker apart).
