Theodore DeReese "Teddy" Pendergrass (March 26th, 1950 – January 13th, 2010) was an American singer. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he initially rose to musical fame as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. After leaving the group over monetary disputes in 1976, Pendergrass launched a successful solo career under the Philadelphia International label, releasing five consecutive platinum albums, then a record for an African-American R&B artist

Teddy is the third album by R&B crooner Teddy Pendergrass, released on June 23, 1979. It included more "bedroom ballads," comparable to Marvin Gaye's Midnight Love. Two singles were released from the album: "Turn Off the Lights", which reached US Pop and on the R&B charts, and "Come Go With Me," which reached R&B. All tracks composed by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff; except where indicated.

In 2006, Pendergrass announced his retirement from the music business. In 2007, he briefly returned to performing to participate in Teddy 25: A Celebration of Life, Hope & Possibilities, a 25th anniversary awards ceremony that marked Pendergrass' accident date, but also raised money for his charity, The Teddy Pendergrass Alliance. The charity provides education and occupational opportunities to people with SCI.

In 1982, he was severely injured in an auto accident in Philadelphia, resulting in his being paralyzed from the chest down.

A concert album, Teddy Live! Coast to Coast, went gold, selling more than half a million copies, followed by another million-seller, TP, in 1980, and the gold It’s Time for Love in 1981. With his 1985 album Workin’ It Back, Mr. Pendergrass began writing some of his own songs. His 1988 album Joy went gold, and its title track became a No. 1 R&B hit. Voodoo, a single from his 1993 album A Little More Magic, was nominated for a Grammy Award. Though he was nominated more than once for the award, he never received on. Pendergrass toured in 1996 in a revival of the musical Your Arms Too Short to Box With God, singing Truly Blessed, a song about him that had been added to the show.
