The Vienna Prater has an area of approx. 6,000,000m2 and is thus twice as large as New York’s Central Park. The park is located in the 2nd Viennese district (Leopoldstadt) and is between Pratertern and Winterhafen. Originally, the Prater was a hunting ground of the Habsburgs, but Joseph II opened it to the public in 1766. Since then, it has enjoyed great popularity with the Viennese as a recreational area.

The Prater (German: ) is a large public park in Vienna's 2nd district (Leopoldstadt). The Wurstelprater, an amusement park that is often simply called "Prater", lies in one corner of the Wiener Prater and includes the Wiener Riesenrad Ferris wheel. The name Prater derives from one or the other or possibly both Latin words pratum, meaning meadow, and Praetor, meaning magistrate or lawyer, possibly via Spanish prado or Italian prato.

The Vienna Prater is in season from March to October. But the world-famous Giant Ferris Wheel and a few other attractions are open all year round. The Prater: A playground for everyone. In winter, the Jesuitenwiese meadow in Vienna’s Prater becomes a big playground. A snow-making machine provides enough of the white stuff for a proper snowball fight. In addition to cross-country trails, there is also a tobogganing hill, which was created from the ruins of houses bombed during the Second World War.
