Another song from the musical, Lover, Come Back to Me, was recorded by a number of artists and had three recordings in the charts for 1929. The 1940 version featured the singing team of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. New Moon was the last operetta that Sigmund Romberg composed. Artie Shaw’s 1938 recording of Softly As In A Morning Sunrise (King of the Clarinet 1938-39) is the first noteworthy jazz version of the song and is perhaps the classic pre-bop example of this tune. Abbey Lincoln’s haunting 1958 vocal recording (Abbey Is Blue), meanwhile, is an excellent place to begin when learning the song in a more straightforward manner and a great example of how the song is approached in a small group.

Nelson Ackerman Eddy (June 29, 1901 – March 6, 1967) was an American singer and actor who appeared in 19 musical films during the 1930s and 1940s, as well as in opera and on the concert stage, radio, television, and in nightclubs. A classically trained baritone, he is best remembered for the eight films in which he costarred with soprano Jeanette MacDonald. Fickle was she And clever So will it be, forever, forever Softly, as in a morning sunrise. The light of love comes stealing Into a new born day, oh Flaming with all the glow of sunrise A burning kiss is sealing. The vow that all betray For the passions that thrill love And lift you high to heaven Are the passions that kill love.

This arrangement of the standard Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise really cooks! Dave Rivello’s hot Latin and swing chart will excite and challenge the band. Solos are written out or ad lib for alto sax and trombone plus drum and optional percussion. Lead trumpet range is to written B-flat above the staff. Softly, As In a Morning Sunrise.
